A Visit from Uncle Nic
A Christmas Ally Poem
’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
And I hoped that an Ally soon would be there.
My gay self lay still, uncomfortable in bed,
While whispers of homophobia filled up my head.
Christmas brings family from far and from near,
Even the ones who don’t hold me so dear.
When out in the driveway there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the snow gave a bright, gentle light
That made the whole world glow sparkling and white.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Toyota RAV4 and my uncle with his gear.
With his arms full of gifts and his dog Dynomite,
I knew in a moment he’d make everything right.
More welcome than Santa, his sight made me smile,
And I heard him exclaim, “Where’s my best nephew Myles?”
I raced down the stairs, my heart beating quick,
And gave a big hug to my favorite Uncle Nic.
I knew he’d come early to be by my side,
To keep me safe, steady, and help me survive.
We woke the whole house, but that didn’t matter,
As my parents and siblings began to gather.
More rapid than eagles my family came,
And he smiled and he chuckled and called them by name:
Hi Sis! Hi Michael! Hi Mandy and Matt! Hi Mollie! Hi Morgan! Hi Maddy and Max!
Tomorrow is Christmas, and I’m here to spread cheer,
And quiet the chatter that fills Myles with fear.
We all love him dearly and accept that he’s gay,
But more is required on this special day.
My family gathered to hear Uncle Nic,
While Dynomite lay by me, his tail wagging quick.
Allyship matters each day of the year,
But Christmas is when we make it more clear.
Be active and vigilant, gracious and kind,
Even when Aunt Janice seems out of her mind.
Allyship is compassion, and kindness, and love—
Standing up for Myles, going beyond and above.
With his wisdom all shared, Uncle Nic stretched and yawned.
“I’m tired,” he said. “I’ll see you at dawn.”
Off to the guest room he and Dynomite went,
And I knew in that moment my Ally was sent.
And I heard him exclaim as he vanished out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
